Competitive Landscape
Heineken Nv?And Kirin Holdings Co Ltd Reinforce Overall Dominance Even as Volume Share Is Eroded
Beer remains highly concentrated, with Lion - Beer, Wine and Spirits (NZ) Ltd and DB Breweries Ltd together controlling 68% volume share in 2025. Over the period from 2020 to 2025, both companies lost some ground linked to rising consumer interest in craft and speciality beer.
Dna Brewing’S Acquisition of Hop Federation Signals Strategic Consolidation
The acquisition of Hop Federation by DNA Brewing in December 2025 marks a notable shift in the landscape for smaller breweries, as DNA Brewing rescued Hop Federation from closure by incorporating it into a multi-brand, single-site production model. This move reflects broader consolidation pressures, with small brewers facing unsustainable operational costs and stagnant domestic demand, resulting in a trend where survival increasingly depends on integration with larger entities.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
